Ithaca in the Sun – Searching for Gian Piero Motti explores the life, ideas and legacy of Gian Piero Motti, one of Italy’s most influential and unconventional climbers. Through the iconic granite walls of Valle dell’Orco and the legendary climbing route Itaca nel Sole, the film retraces Motti’s role in the Nuovo Mattino movement, which challenged traditional notions of mountaineering and redefined climbing as an expression of freedom, creativity and personal discovery. Featuring archive footage, photographs, Motti’s writings and interviews with friends, climbing partners and leading figures from the Italian climbing world, the documentary offers an intimate portrait of a visionary whose ideas continue to influence generations of climbers.
